Certificate for Music Educators – CME

Newham Music Certificate for Music Educators (RQF Level 4 equivalent to the first year of a bachelors degree)

The NM CME is a nationally recognised qualification that will support you to develop your music teaching skills, specifically your self-reflective practice. You will work with a mentor throughout who will help guide you.  Typically it will take between 3-12 months to complete although it is possible to complete in a shorter time frame.

As a general outline for the programme you will:

  • identify 2 or 3 targets that you want to develop in your own teaching
  • create an action plan to detail what you will do to develop your teaching
  • video a lesson of your teaching at the outset
  • watch the video and complete a self-reflective exercise to identify strengths and areas for development
  • be observed by your mentor who will complete a reflective observation of your teaching (using the video lesson)
  • develop your teaching through observing other teachers, have other teachers observe you, research relevant ideas through reading, discussion and watching video resources, attend training at Newham Music and with other organisations
  • keep a weekly diary to evidence your journey
  • create lesson plans for your work
  • create child-led assessments for the learning that you use
  • video another lesson after a few weeks or a term
  • complete another self-reflective exercise to measure your development and evidence how your lessons are inclusive, promote positive behaviour management and include good safeguarding practice

Alongside this you will attend optional training sessions (approx 12-15 hours) including:
Induction training session (3 hours )
Written Assignments tutorial (2 hours) looking at resources, pedagogies and what music learning can mean for young people. (3000 words max in total)
